Le Meridien Penang Airport, a 200 room international class hotel and part of the components of a mixed-use development known as Penang Gateway will be built starting in the middle of 2022 near Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas and is estimated to be completed in four years’ time or by 2026 (Bulletin Mutiara 2022).

Hotel management agreement (HMA) signing ceremony between Marriott International Inc and innovative developer Rackson Group was witnessed by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, along with Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim on the 5th January 2022 and said that the state was honoured to welcome a top-rated hotel to the hospitality industry in Penang (Bulletin Mutiara 2022).

According to Chow, Le Meridien, an award-winning brand that will undoubtedly add hype to the state’s existing vibrant and dynamic landscape, particularly in the island’s southwest district. Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone where over 300 multi-national companies operate is located nearby the upcoming hotel. Penang was previously a traditional seaport economy before gradually evolving into the Silicon Valley of the East, and this year, we celebrate the golden jubilee of our industrialisation journey.

Being part of the RM1.5bil Penang Gateway in Bayan Lepas the location is predicted to boom with plenty of activities and opportunities. The hotel will definitely provide an all-inclusive experience and convenience to business travellers and holiday seekers. Le Meridien is designed by SA Architects Malaysia, other components for the Penang Gateway’s first phase development include serviced suites and retail components.

Yeoh Soo Hin, vice-president (asset management) represented Marriott International while Ng Lim Hon, chairman and Kelvin Lor, chief executive officer represented Rackson Group at the HMA signing ceremony.

According to Yeoh, they are confident that the hotel will be successful due to its strategic location where in close proximity to many notable local companies and MNCs, the loyalty of Marriott Bonvoy’s members today and the multi-decade long-term rise in travel among the newly-minted global middle class. Marriott International, the largest hotel management company in the world and in Malaysia, is very excited to enter into a partnership with Rackson Group to bring one of their premium brands Le Meridien to Penang. The signing mark Marriott International’s commitment to further growing its footprint across Malaysia which stands at 35 opened hotels and 17 brands, as of today.

According to Lor, they are proud to be associated with a prestigious brand like Marriott International. Le Meridien Penang Airport would feature a 2,000sq ft presidential suite as well as an infinity pool overseeing the runaway of Penang airport. This project meant a lot to Rackson Group and represents a big leap forward for an up-and-coming developer similar to them. The facade of the hotel building will stand out prominently with its interesting design elements.it would be almost impossible for business clientele and holidaymakers, both local and international, to miss this landmark upon touching down at the airport.

The evening also saw the signing of an exclusive appointment agreement between Rackson Group and Zeon Properties Group, which has been appointed by Rackson as its exclusive marketing partner.

Lee too look up to Zeon by saying that if Zeon could turn Automall Karpal Singh Drive into a one-stop integrated entertainment destination similar to Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong, they believed they are able to do the same in growing Penang Gateway into another iconic landmark and popular lifestyle attraction for young people at the Penang airport.
